I. Opening Song
Song: ”Death Was Arrested”
II. Call To Worship
Reading: Psalm 98
Call: This is the Word of the Lord.
Response: Praise be to God
Song: “Come Thou Fount”
Individual Call: Psalm 139:23-24,
23 Search me, O God, and know my heart!
Try me and know my thoughts!
24 And see if there be any grievous way in me,
and lead me in the way everlasting!
Lord, as the flowers fade and the grass withers they sing the song of your praise. All creation groans together as we wait for the final redemption. But for us, rather than accompany creation in this song of hope, we have released bitterness to tighten our lips, and we have turned our heads to despise. Instead of joining the creation in their hallelujah chorus we let our hearts wither and our affections fade inside. The hopelessness of sin has led us into the howling wasteland of wickedness, and we have joined the choir of the damned in scoffing the Rock of our salvation. Oh Lord, we are undeserving of anything that comes from your hand, for we have despised the waters of our baptism, and we have neglected the blood-sealed invitation to your table. And even still, your unrelenting grace and mercy are astonishing. So we come, not hiding the shame of our sin, to your cross, seeking forgiveness by the atoning work of Jesus.
Response: Father, forgive us.
Song: “Come As You Are”
IV. Assurance of Pardon
Yes, the grace of God is indeed astonishing. For his forgiveness extends to the depths of our sin. We do not serve a God who forgives only in part, but instead, he has thoroughly washed you in his grace and has cleansed you in his righteousness. For on this day he has been faithful to his covenant promise to never leave you nor forsake you; therefore do not mourn or weep over your sin, for you have been given new life in the precious blood of Christ. Rejoice that your sin, though severe, has been nailed to the cross, your guilt has been buried, and your condemnation has been pardoned by the King of kings and the Lord of lords. He has invited you into his presence to feast on fatty meat and well-aged wine. He has brought you into his presence to dine with you, to fellowship, and to sing over you. Church, you are loved with the most profound love the world has ever known. So receive his forgiveness and hear these words, by the great and powerful name of Jesus I declare to you that your sins are forgiven!
Response: Praise be to God!
Song: “O Praise The Name (Anastasis)”
