Response: Praise be to God
Song: “How Great Is Our God"
Individual Call: Psalm 139:23-24,
23 Search me, O God, and know my heart!
Try me and know my thoughts!
24 And see if there be any grievous way in me,
and lead me in the way everlasting!
Lord, the Scriptures say that apart from your resurrecting grace we are nothing more than dead dry bones. Our hearts are prone to wander, and our most righteous acts are filthy rags before you. The legacy of our sin is death, the stench of our depravity is repulsing, and the wickedness of our hearts provide us with no hope. Left to ourselves our bones rot with sin, and our iniquities are an offense to your holiness. We see that we are worthy of only death, and your glory demands justice. Judgment is what we deserve, for our thoughts, our actions, our words, and our desires testify against us. We see that we are guilty before you, and we know we cannot stand before you as we are. So we confess our sins and trust in the atoning work of Christ on our behalf. So hear our cry, Lord. We confess we are broken; we confess our evil thoughts, words, actions, motives, and the secret sins we are afraid to bring into the light. We come before you as your children, deserving death, yet seeking the life-giving power of Christ.
Response: Father, forgive us.
Song: “I Need Thee"
IV. Assurance of Pardon
The legacy of sin is death, and we have confessed that death is what we deserve. But Jesus Christ has entered into the darkness, into the filth, into the valley of dry bones and has transformed the legacy of his people to no longer be one of death, but one of glory. For on the Cross we see his love has overcome our hate, his peace has overcome the chaos of our souls, and his righteousness has brought forgiveness to our rebellious hearts. Because of the complete and total death of the only Son of God, he has brought many sons and daughters to glory. Church, this is the hope of the gospel, though our sin-stained legacy was death, Jesus has entered into death's grave and has completely and entirely conquered sin's power. And by his resurrection, he has ushered his bride into his eternal glory. So Church, hear these words: by the great and powerful name of Jesus, the one who entered the grave and was raised back to life, I declare to you that your sins are forgiven!
Response: Praise be to God!
