I. Opening Song
Song: “Come Thou Fount”
II. Call To Worship
Reading: Psalm 103:15-22
Call: This is the Word of the Lord.
Response: Praise be to God
Song: “How Great Is Our God”
Individual Call: Psalm 139:23-24,
23 Search me, O God, and know my heart!
Try me and know my thoughts!
24 And see if there be any grievous way in me,
and lead me in the way everlasting!
As we gaze upon the cross, we see the severity of our sin; we see the weight of our sin, and we see the cost of our sin. However, we so often turn our eyes from the cross hiding ourselves from its glory, for we cannot bear to see our sin as it really is. Like the religious leaders of Jesus’ day, we have become proficient of rationalizing our sin, we have become skilled at shrugging off its damning effect. We call laziness, rest. We call cowardice, wisdom. We call false worship, entertainment. But God, you have given us your Spirit, and your Spirit opens our eyes and turns our vision to the cross. And there we see our sin for what it really is. As we look to the cross, we are reminded of our need to confess our sins. So we pray to you now.
Response: Father, forgive us.
Song: “Nothing But the Blood"
IV. Assurance of Pardon
Upon that cross, Jesus bore the sins of his people. He was shamed, so you don’t have to be. He took our guilt, so we could be marked with his innocence. He took our wrath so that we could receive his peace. His blood was shed so we could be healed. As he hung upon that tree, as he became the curse for us, as he was breathing his last breath he was at the same time conquering every evil scheme of Satan, he was destroying strongholds of demonic powers, and he was ripping the veil that would keep us from the presence of God. Church, upon that tree Jesus was securing your redemption. He was breaking the chains of guilt and shame, and he was rescuing you from the prison of sin. So today, you stand a son and daughter of the King. It is only by the power of the gospel, the life death, and resurrection of King Jesus that I get to declare to you with all authority in heaven and on earth, that your sins are forgiven!
Response: Praise be to God!
